Masonry, render and pebbledash

The wall decides the paint. Cement render, pebbledash, lime and granite all behave differently, and the wrong coating traps damp or peels within a few winters.

Textured masonry and pebbledash

We treat with a fungicidal wash, repair cracks and blown patches, then apply masonry coatings by roller or spray. Pebbledash is often best sprayed for full coverage into the stones.

Lime and breathable coatings

Older Cornish homes were built to breathe. We use lime coatings and breathable mineral paints, including Johnstone's Sol Silicate, which we applied over primed bare lime render on a cottage we were proud to work on. Stone and masonry sealers are chosen to be breathable on lime.

Coastal protection

For homes in the firing line of sea spray we offer hydrophobic and self-cleaning coatings that shed water and resist green growth, and masonry paints with biocides and anti-fungal inhibitors such as Zinsser AllWeather.

Repairs first

We carry out masonry repairs before painting, so the coating isn't hiding problems. Read which paint suits a coastal home.

Where we work

We cover all of Cornwall from Penzance, including Penzance, St Ives, Hayle, Helston, Falmouth, Redruth, Truro, Newquay, St Austell, St Just.

Questions

Can you paint over lime render with normal masonry paint?

We don't recommend it. Plastic-based paints trap moisture in lime. We use breathable silicate or lime coatings instead.

How long does exterior masonry paint last by the sea?

It depends on exposure and product. Some pliolite masonry paints are rated for up to 15 years when applied to a well-prepared wall.
